Twin Engine flies to victory

Twin Engine flew home to break her maiden in devastating fashion on the Ballarat Synthetic on Tuesday, August 13.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the three-year-old filly went into overdrive over the final 300 metres to take out the Pipe Pro Directional Drilling Maiden (1400m).

After beginning slowly, jockey Harry Coffey elected to let Twin Engine balance up early in the field of seven, travelling three wide with a trail to the home.

Once Coffey asked her to extend, Twin Engine ($1.95 fav) dashed away to win by 5-1/4 lengths from La Plage ($7.50) with Cullivel ($12), three-quarters of a length away third.

Trainer Tony McEvoy believes Twin Engine has more good wins ahead.

“She is a really nice young filly that we have liked all along,” McEvoy said.

“We took her to Bendigo and were a little bit bullish about her chances but she didn’t stretch out at all in the soft ground.

“We knew she had more in the tank than she showed us that day.

“The synthetic gives those young horses which don’t like the soft ground a chance to win and she was impressive today.

“We had expected her to lead or be outside lead, but when she didn’t jump cleanly, Harry (Coffey) showed why he finished fourth in the Scobie Breasley (Medal), didn’t panic and gave her a beautiful run and she won as she liked.”

McEvoy said the stable liked jockey Harry Coffey.

“We’ve got a lot of faith in him, he is a very good human.

“I have always felt he was a top five Melbourne jockey, and that is where he is, running fourth in the Scobie.

“I’m very proud of him, he is a hard worker and deserves his success.”

Jockey Harry Coffey said it had been his first winning ride in the new colours of owner Wayne Mitchell.

“Wayne has a great association with the McEvoy team, so it was nice to get the monkey off the back and a win in these colours.

“We wanted to sit outside the leader and take luck out of it, but she didn’t jump well, and I didn’t want to give her a squeeze and push her to that position, I didn’t think it was the right thing at her first run at 1400 metres.

“We wanted her to be running through the line, win, lose or draw making sure she looked good at the trip.

“Luckily enough they raced in a bunch, and I got a bit of cover, she had a nice turn of foot and exploded away from them, then got a bit lost.

“She should get confidence from the win and hopefully she can go on and win in better grades.”
