Tewkesbury wins again
A perfect ride by jockey Harry Coffey enabled Tewkesbury to grab his second win at Mildura on Monday, October 7.
After having a perfect trail on the leaders, Coffey took Tewkesbury to the front in the home straight to take out the Cup Day Packages On Sale Benchmark 58 Handicap (2000m).
Sent out the $2.10 favourite, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained five-year-old had to fight hard to hold off Midnight Lady ($4.60) by a long neck with Back Me Up Benny ($8.50) a half-length away third.
Trainer Tony McEvoy said Tewkesbury deserved another victory.
“He’s a nice little horse,” McEvoy said.
“He has been frustrating, always finding a way to get beaten, and he has run eight seconds from just 16 starts.
“Harry (Coffey) gave him a peach today and he put his head out for us.
“He is running consistently, and well, and picking up a cheque every time.
“But the game is about winning and hopefully he can go on with it now.”
Winning jockey Harry Coffey said Tewkesbury was capable of more wins.
“We got a nice run, and he looked the horse to beat,” Coffey said.
“But he had a little think in the straight and he took a bit of talking into it.
“I think today will give him a little bit of confidence because he has ability but has been running seconds and into horses better than him.
“Hopefully, he is back into his winning ways.
“I did hit the front early, but I wanted to make a good thing of it, but it was a long way up the straight.
“Racing is so competitive it doesn’t matter where you are, it is hard to win.
“He has been a bit stiff I suppose, he does get to the front and have a look for his friends.
“Luckily enough, today we got the job done.
“As soon as we got past the post the engine shut down, he only does what he has to.”
