Showgirl a pinup

Nevada Showgirl was the pinup at Kyneton on Thursday, December 14 breaking through for her initial win.

Trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy and jockey Harry Coffey continued their form from Ballarat Cup day combining to take out the Macedon Ranges Ag Machinery Maiden (1454m) with the three-year-old filly.

The trio had a treble at Ballarat, and Nevada Showgirl looked the winner for them a long way out at Kyneton.

Coffey had the filly away nicely and settled her one-out, one-back before asking her to challenge turning for home.

Nevada Showgirl ($4.20) looked to ‘float’ in the run to the line but responded to Coffey’s riding to score by a neck from Papal Wars ($4.40) with Phair Plan ($8.50) a similar margin away third.

It was the filly’s second run from a spell, and she looks to be a definite improver going forward.

Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell, said the stable was enjoying a purple patch of form.

“The stable is ticking over well, long may it continue,” Moore said.

“It was a fantastic ride by Harry today on Nevada Showgirl.

“Barrier two on paper looked a good gate but it can be a bit tricky here at Kyneton and the inside looked off today.

“I thought he (Coffey) timed his run perfectly, getting one-off early in the race, then coming down that middle part of the track where the winners have been coming.

“I think she has a bit of upside this girl, in time she should get over a trip up to 2000 metres, being by Boulder City, the brother of Winx.

“We won’t get too adventurous just yet, but it is good to get a win in these famous colours of John Langlands.

“They are very famous colours having won a Blue Diamond with Principality and there were a really good group of owners here today.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey agreed Nevada Showgirl was an improver and was enjoying a successful association with the McEvoys.

“You always have your runs, and we are going through a good patch at this stage,” Coffey said.

“They (Tony & Calvin) have been placing their horses really well and I have been the lucky beneficiary.

“Nevada Showgirl did a good job.

“We got a nice run. I think she had a really good, tough run last time over 1400 metres and that stood us in good stead for today.

“She obviously had to fight off a couple of challengers late, so she did a good job.

“It is a great spot to be in racing, one-one, but I did have to face her up a bit earlier than I would have liked and went for a searching run but I was looking for that middle part of the track to give her every opportunity to finish the best she could.

“I think she is still a bit green.

“She travelled really well but once I asked for the supreme effort she got a bit lost.

“When she fully learns how to level out and fight hard, she can go up in grade and race well.

“Perhaps today’s win can be a step towards learning more.”
