Fresh Renegade rules

Stable jockey Barend Vorster was seen at his best landing Renegade a comfortable winner at Murray Bridge on Saturday, January 9.

Vorster gave the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained six-year-old the run of the race in the Magic Millions Handicap (1400m).

From gate eight, he had Renegade third on the fence trailing the leaders on settling down.

Vorster eased the gelding to the outside turning for home and he quickly raced to the lead.

On the line, Renegade ($4) had three-quarters of a length to spare from Dexter You Devil ($16) with Jester Halo ($6) a neck away third.

Tim Hanley, South Australian spokesperson for McEvoy Mitchell Racing said he thought the stable had worked out the best preparation for Renegade.

I think the key to him is to keep him fresh,” Hanley said.

“He seems to like racing fresh.

“He was a bit flat at his last start at Morphettville Parks in late November.

“Tony & Calvin sent him up to the farm and spent a bit of time up there and it looks like it has worked a treat.

“We’ve given him plenty of time during his career and that obviously seems to work, gapping his runs.

“It was a 10 out 10 ride today from Barend, everything worked out perfect.”

Today’s win took Renegade’s record to five wins and as many placings from just 22 starts for stakes of $168,590.
